I can't get my laptop to charge. I don't know if it's the laptop or the charger and I don't know when I will be able to check on it. So no more updates for at least two weeks. If you want to know how I am text me. My cellphone ist funktioning (still).

Sydney, Australia
Hier gibt es eine Geschichte zur Fahrt von Neuseeland nach Australien zu erzählen: Wir hatten den zweiten "medizinischen Notfall", der mit einem Hubschrauber abtransportiert werden musste. Das hört sich einfacher an, als es ist, denn zum einen muss das Schiff soweit in Küstennähe sein, dass der Hubschrauber es hin und zurück schafft, zum zweiten muss das aufnehmende Land bereit und in der Lage sein, einen Hubschrauber zu schicken und zum dritten muss das Wetter so sein, dass der Hubschrauber die Bahre herunterlassen und auch wieder hochziehen kann (er darf nicht auf dem Schiff landen und darf auch nicht, während der Patient auf der Bahre festgeschnallt wird, über dem Schiff stehen. All diese Dinge werden einem als Passagier natürlich nicht mitgeteilt (wir sollen ja schließlich Spaß haben), sondern man erfährt es von den (unglaublich zahlreichen) Passagieren, die ständig diese und andere Kreuzfahrten machen und sich schon ml gern als Expert/innen gerieren. Die Folge? Wir sind gerast, um möglichst schnell in die Küstennähe von Australien zu kommen (beim letzten Mal sind wir ein Stück zurückgefahren). Kurz bevor der Hubschrauber das Schiff erreicht, gibt es dann eine Durchsage auf dem Schiff: Die Decks sind gesperrt. Wer in einer Balkonkabine ist muss die Balkontüren schließen, und das Fotografieren ist strengstens untersagt (die Fotos stammen auch von Hubschraubern, die ich über Sydney fotografiert habe). Folge dieser Aktion war, dass wir etwa 12 Stunden zu früh in der Nähe von Sydney waren, aber natürlich nicht in den Hafen einlaufen konnten, da der Liegeplatz ja erst für den nächsten Morgen gebucht war. Also sind wir so langsam wie möglich gefahren (eine bestimmte Geschwindigkeit ist erforderlich, da das Schiff sonst manövrierunfähig wird). Das hat aber noch nicht gereicht, um die Zeit zu füllen, also sind wir auch noch Zickzack gefahren, was zu spürbaren (und unangenehmen) Schiffsbewegungen in der Nacht geführt hat).
There is a story relating to our passage from New Zealand to Australia: We had the second "medicl emergency" that had to be rescued by a helicopter. That sounds easier than it is because for once the ship has to be so close to the coast that the helicopter can make it both ways. Secondly, the country has to be willing and able to send a helicopter. In addition the weather conditions have to be good enough so that the helicopter can lower the guerney and pick it up (it may not land on the ship and has to lower the guerney than leave the ship and come back to pick it up, when it's ready. All these informations you don't get from the ship (remember, we are supposed to have fun), but form the numerous passengers who have done numerous cruises and of cours like to share their knowledge as "experts". As a result we raced form new Zealnad to Australia to be close enough to the coast so that the helicopter could pick up the passenger. Shortly before the helicopter arrives there is an announcement from the captain: The outside decks are closed, if you have a cabin with a balcony you are to close the door and taking pictures is strictly forbidden (the photos of helicopters that I posted I took in Sydney). All this lead to us being way to early close to the Australian coast (approximately 12 hours). We couldn't enter the harbour of Sydney since we were not expected until the next morning, so we went as slowly as possible ( a certain speed is necessary otherwise the ship becommes unable to manouver). But going slowly wasn't enough so we also went zigzagging through the night which caused some uncomfortable moves of the ship.

Die Ankunft habe ich zufällig morgens um halb sechs mitbekommen, und si war wirklich spektakulär.
It was good lauck that I woke up early and could experience our arrival in the harbour. It was spectacular!
So sah sie dann bei Tage aus.

Tour I: Blue Mountains
Die Blue Mountains sind Weltkulturerbe wegen seiner alten Bäume und der 120 verschiedenen Eukalyptusbäume, die es dort gibt. Von der Entstehungsgeschichte sind sie dem Grand Canyon vergleichbar, d.h. irgendwann hat sich ein Plateau in einer Ebene hochgeschoben, dass dann wieder auseinanderriss. Anders als im Grand Canyon ist aber bei den Blue Mountains nicht ein Fluss am Grunde der Schlucht, sondern ein Regenwald, der entstehen konnte wegen der hohen Temperaturen in Verbindung mit fehlendem Sonnenlicht. Aber erst mal hinkommen, ca. 2 Stunden Busfahrt, obwohl es nur 60 km waren, aber Großstadt ist Großstandt. Ineressant war, dass wir durch einen 10 Kilometer langen Tunnel gefahren sind. Davon soll es mehrere geben, da Sydney so überfüllt ist, dass man begonnen hat, die Straßen unter die Erde zu verlegen (auf die Idee, Autos bzuschaffen, ist man wohl nicht gekommen). Das funktioniert, weil Sydney auf Sandstein gebaut ist, den man einerseits gut bearbeiten kann, der aber andererseits sehr stabil ist. Wie groß die Platznot it, konnte man auch daran erkennen, dass Sydney inzwischen bis an den Fuß der Blue Mountains reicht. Der Name stammt übrigens daher, dass bei bestimmten Temperatur- und Lichtverhältnissen die ätherischen Öle der Euklyptusbäume aufsteigen und einen blauen Schimmer produzieren.
The Blue Mountains are part of the World Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO becoause of their old trees and the 120 different types of Eucalyptus trees you can find there. As to their origin it is comparable to the Grand Canyon, meaning that at some point in history a plateau was pushed up which then later on split again. In contrast to the Grand Canyon which has a river (and only a river) at the bottom of the gorge, the Blue Mountains have a rainforrest which could develop because of the high temperatures in connexion with little sunlight. But first we had to get there. althoug it was only about 40 miles it took us about 2 hours. Big cities are alike everywhere! At one point we rode through a tunnel of 6 miles, of which they have more than one because there isn't enough space for the cars (to reduce the amount of cars doesn't seem to be on their agenda). The tunnel building works because Sydney is built on sandstone which is easy to cut through while at the same time very stable. How little space the still have we could also see in the fact that Sydney stretches out right up to the Blue Mountains. The name originates in the fact that if the temperature and the sunlight is right the eucalyptus trees emit their oil which creates a blue light.
Und dann waren wir auch schon da, erhaschten einen ersten Blick auf die drei Schwestern (in meiner Familie wäre natürlich die erste Reaktion: "Welche drei?" und fuhren mit der steilsten Zahnradbahn der Welt (ist jetzt also auch abgehakt :-) ins Tal.
And then we were there and got a first view of the rock formation called "The three sisters" (In my family the first response to that would have been "Which three?" :-) and we took the steepest cog railway (I can cross that of my list now) to the bottom.
Auf der Fahrt in der Zahnradbahn habe ich eine nette deutsche Touristin kennengelernt, die von einem anderen Schiff kam. Sie hatte eine halbe Weltreise gebucht (Bremerhafen - Sydney) und hätte eigentlich jetzt wieder nach D fliegen sollen. Ging aber nicht, weil ja wegen des Angriffs auf den Iran der gesamte Luftraum gesperrt ist (Scheißkrieg). Da der Rückflug Teil ihrer gebuchten Reise war, bot ihr die Reederei an, für nur wenige tausend Euro einfach bis Mauritius auf dem Schiff zu bleiben und von da zurückzufliegen. Ihre erste Reaktion? Den Schiffsarzt aufsuchen und fragen, ob er ihr die notwendigen Medikamente besorgen kann...
Unten sind wir dann an der Kohlenmiene vorbeigelaufen, wegen der die Bahn ursprünglich gebaut wurde, und auf Holzpfaden weiter durch den Regenwald bis zu einer Gondelstation, die uns wieder nach oben brachte. Hier hätte ich gern noch viel mehr Zeit gehabt.
On the train I got to know a nice German tourist who came from another ship. She had booked a cruise from Germany to Sidney and was supposed to fly back to Germany. Well, because of the attack of Iran she couldn't fly and the company offered her a deal to stay on the ship until Mauritius and fly home from there. Her first reaction: Go to the docotor and ask him if he can provide the necesserary pills...
Down at the bottom we walked by the coal mine which was the original reason for bulding that train and then we walked on wooden paths to the gondola that took us back up. I would have loved to spend more time here.
Weiter ging's zu einem Aussichtspunkt, um die "drei Schwestern" ein letztes Mal zu bewundern. Hier war bemerkenswert, dass wir buchstäblich im dichtesten Nebel ankamen, der sich aber innerhalb von Minuten lichtete und einen schönen Blick ermöglichte.Auch eine kleine Buddhastatuette tauchte unversehens auf.
We went on to a platform to have a good view of the "three sisters" for the last time. When we arrived there was thick fog, which somehow vanished in a matter of minutes so we did have a nice view. Also a littel Buddha suddenly appeared.

uf dem Rückweg gab es dann noch mal jede Menge Wolkenkratzer und alte Mauern anzusehen. Das war dann schon fast überwältigend. Da habe ich nach der Tour noch einen kleinen Spaziergang zur Oper und zurück gemacht.
On our way back there were a lot of skyxcrapers and old walls to see. That ws almost overwhelming, so after the tour I took a short stroll to the opera and back.

Wellington, Neuseeland
Auch Wellington hat mir gut gefallen. Allerdings war es kalt (13 Grad C), es gab Schauer, und ich war noch ganz erschöpft von meinen Abenteuern in Auckland. Da hatte ein Seetag nicht ausgereicht, um mich zu erholen. Also habe ich nur die gebuchte Tour per Bus mit manchmal Aussteigen gemacht und mich anschließend auf dem Schiff zu erholen versucht. Aufgefallen ist mir, dass es hier so um 1860 herum einen Vulkanausbruch gab, der die Stadt um einiges vergrößert hat. Also geht es hier viel um "vor dem Vulkanausbruch" und nach dem Vulkanausbruch". Bei uns ist das wohl momentan "vor der Wende" und "nach der Wende", und ich finde es bemerkenswert, dass Länder/Städte/Kulturen sich an solchen Ereignissen orientieren und damit offensichtlich eigene Zeitschienen schaffen, die nur für sie gelten.
I also liked Wellington, except it was cold (around 55 degrees F) and I was still pretty exhausted from all my adventures in Auckland. One day at sea had not been enough to recuperate. So I just did the tour that I had booked (mostly on the bus and sometimes get out) and then get back on the boat and relax. I did notice that there had been a major volcano eruption around 1860, which enlarged Wellington. So a lot was about "before the eruption" and "after the eruption". In Germany right now the equivalent would be "before the reunion" and "after the reunion", and it's remarquable how countries(cities/cultures use events for orientation in their history thus creating their very own timeline.
Wir haben verschiedene Gebäude passiert, die ich z.T. sehr sehenswert fand. Einige davon sind auf Rollen gestellt und von einer Straßenseite auf die andere transportiert worden. Kaum zu glauben.
We came by different buildings which I found nice to look at. Some of then had been put on wheels and were pushed to another place, because they wanted them there. Hard to believe consicering the size of the buildings.
Ihr Parlamentsgebäude nennen sie Bienenstock (bee hive), und jeder kann reingehen, es gibt dort keine Beschränkungen.
Their Parlament building they call beehive and everybody can enter it. No security.
Immer wieder dachte ich hier "Hobbitland", und in der Tat hätte es mich nicht überrascht, einen Hobbit zu treffen oder ein anderes Fabelwesen aus dem Wald heraustreten zu sehen.
Often times I did think here "hobbitland", and indeed i wouldn't have been surprised to meet one or watch another of those fairy beings step out of the thik brush.
Dieses Foto zeigt die Landebahn von Wellington, und man kann sehr schön sehen, dass sowohl davor als auch dahinter Wasser is. Besonders lang scheint sie mir auch nicht zu sein..

Neuseeland exportiert viel Holz. Dieses Riesenlager war direkt am Hafen.
New Zealand exports a lot of wood. This huge storage place was right at the harbour.
Einen Rosengarten haben wir auch besichtigt. Erst fand ich das einigermaßen langweilig, aber dann entdeckte ich, dass der letzte Regenschauer überall auf den (wenigen vorhandenen) Blüten wunderschöne Wassertropfen hinterlassen hatte und habe das fotografiert.
We also visited a rosegarden. At first I didn't care for that very much, but then I discovered that the last rainfall had left beautiful raindrops on the roses and started to take pictures of that.
Bei dem Rosengarten war auch dieses etwas merkwürdige Arrangement aus Wasserfall, Teich und Gedicht.
At the rosegarden I found also this funny arrangement of a waterfall, a pond and a poem.
Ein Museum gab es natürlich auch, das maritime, und wieder war ich erstaunt, was ich fotografiert habe (Das Museum war eigentlich nett).
Of course we went into a museum (the maritim museum), and again I was surprised what I took a picture of (the museum was acutally nice).

Der "Chor" hat mal wieder gesungen. Diesmal mit den drei Tenören ein maorisches Wiegenlied. Hat wieder Spaß gemacht, besonders weil das Publikum uns jetzt kennt und mag.
The choir sang again. This time it was a Maori lullaby together with three Maori tenors. It was fun to notice that the audience is starting to know and appreciate us.

Auckland, Neuseeland
Auckland hat mir gut gefallen. Nicht nur, weil der Hafen direkt an der Stadt liegt (und es gibt eine Stadt mit Geschäften, Plätzen, Kneipen und Restaurants). Hier herrscht auch eine friedliche Atmosphäre, die Menschen sind freundlich zu den Touristen, aber auch zueinander, sogar die Vögel sind nicht so scheu wie bei uns. Ich lerne, dass Neuseeland bis vor etwa 800 Jahren nur von Vögeln und Reptilien bewohnt war (also nicht nur keine Menschen, sondern auch keine Säugetiere). Die ersten Siedler waren die Maoris, die aus Polynesien gekommen waren. Danach gab es die üblichen Kolonialilsierungen (der Name Neuseeland kommt von den Holländern), die Maori nennen es Aotearoa, was so viel heißt wie "Land der langen weißen Wolke".
I like Auckland very much. Not only because the harbour was directly in the center of the city (and there is a citycenter with stores, public places, restaurants and pubs). It is also very peaceful here, people are friendly with tourists but also with eachother. I learn that 800 years ago the Maoris were the first people to come th New Zealand. Until then there were only birds and reptils on the island (so no mammals). The Maoris came from Polynesia. After that there were the usual colonisation processes (The name New Zealand is originally dutsch), the Maoris called it Aoteroa which means "the land of the long white cloud."
In Auckland hatte ich zwei Touren und habe auch einiges allein unternommen, worauf ich sehr stolz bin. Das traue ich mich nicht überall, oft reicht auch die Energie nicht mehr, aber hier war es so schön, dass es mir nicht wirklich schwer fiel. Die Fotos von beiden Tagen habe ich zusammengeschmissen und ein bisschen in Kategorien sortiert, damit es handhabbar wird. Noch kurz zu Auckland: 1,3 Mio. Einwohner, war mal die Hauptstadt, wurde aber dann von Wellington abgelöst, da dieses zentraler liegt. Eine Tour war ein dreistündiger Spaziergang durch Auckland, die andere eine Tour mit dem Bus und verschiedenen Stationen
I had two tours in Auckland and in addition, I did things on my own, which I am really proud of. Often, I don't dare to do that or I don't have enough energy, but I liked it so much here that it was kind of easy. So I did take a lot of photos and have put them in categories so that it won't be so overwhelming. About Auckland: 1,3 mio. inhabitants, used to be the capital but lost its status to Wellington, which is more in the middle. One of the tours was a three hour walk through Auckland, the other one a bus tour with several stops.

Ein großes historisches Museum haben wir auch besucht, hatten aber nur eine Stunde Zeit, daher hat mich die Auswahl dessen, was ich fotografiert habe, selbst ein wenig überrascht...

Auch hier gibt es viel Regen, daher viel grün und wunderbare Bäume.
It rains a lot here, so there's a lot of green and wonderful trees.
Mit einer kleinen Fähre habe ich einen Ausflug nach Davenport, einer vorgelagerten Insel, gemacht und dort die Ruhe genossen
I took a trip to Davenport, a small island, with a ferry and enjoyed the quiet and peace there.
Die Harbour Bridge darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Ja, ich bin drübergefahren.
Of course Harbour Bridge has to be included and yes, I went over it.

Die folgenden Kuknstwerke sind alle im Zentrum von Auckland aufgenommen worden und ausnahmslos von Maoris geschaffen worden. Das zeigt so ein bisschen, wie hier mit den ersten Bewohner/innen umgegangen wird. So sind auch alle Straßennahmen und sonstigen Informationen zweisprachig und Maori wird in den Schulen gelehrt (Wenn mal ein konservativer Politiker daran etwas ändern will, gibt es lange und erfolgreiche Streiks).
The following pieces of art are all in the center of Auckland and without exception bei createdMaori artist, which is a good example of how the country deals with the first inhabitants. All street signs and other signe are bilingual and Maori is being taught in school (and when some conservative politician tries to change that there are long and successful strikes).

Auf den Skytwoer mit seinen 328 m der höchste Turm der südlichen Hemisphäre (der Eiffelturm hat 330 m) sind alle sehr stolz. Man soll einen wunderbaren Blick in alle Richtungen haben. Das verrückte ist die Möglichkeit, den Turm im freien Fall in einer Art Geschirr zu verlassen. Ich habe das tatsächlich fotografiert bekommen.
People are very proud of the skytower which is 328 m high and the highest television tower in the southern hemisphere (the Eiffeltower is 330m high). You can look in all directions and have a wonderful view. The bizaare thing is that you can "fall" from the tower in some kind of a harness. I was able to take a picture of that. It's like a controlled bungee-jump.

Suva, Fidschi Inseln
Wir sind immer noch im Südpzifik. Hier hatte ich eine wunderbare Tour zum Colo-I-Suva Forrest Reserve gebucht, die zwar anstrengend, aber wunderschön war. Außerdem hatten wir einen netten Tour guide, der uns mit wunderbaren Informtionenn über Fidschi versorgte, z.B. dass es hier bis vorgestern noch Kannibalismus gegeben hätte.
We are still at the South Pacific. I had booked a wonderful tour to the Colo-I-Suva Forrest Reserve which was exhausting because of the damp heat but also wonderful. In addition to that we had a nice tour guide who gave us insteresting faxts about Fidschi, for example that they had kannibalism until the day before yesterday.

Es ist sehr heiß hier, schwül und heiß, und der klimatisierte Bus kommt gerade recht. Wir fahren an sattem Grün vorbei und durch kleine Orte, in denen Hütte an Hütte steht. Unser guide erklärt uns, dass die Häuser hier überwiegend aus Holz sind, weil sich nur wohlhabendere Häuser aus Beton leisten können. Die Holzhäuser werdenmeistens in der Hurricane-Saison zerstört und müssen dann wieder aufgebaut werden. Sie stehen dicht an dicht, weil meistens Familienmitglieder nebeneinander bauen. Alle Häuer (auch die aus Beton) brauchen keine Heizung, weil es niemals so kalt wird und haben meist kein Glas in den Fenstern, weil dann besser gelüftet werden kann. Wir passieren einen Mormonen Tempel und eine Friedhof und lernen, dass Einheimische, Chinesen und Angehörige des Militärs auf unterschiedlichen Friedhöfen beigesetzt werden.
It is very damp and hot and the air conditioned bus is greeted with great enthusiadm. We drive through very green rainforrest and through villages where the houses are very close to eachother. We learn that most people can only afford houses from wood which are regularly destroyed during hurricane-season and have to be rebuilt. Only the wealthier people can afford houses from concrete. All the houses don't need heating because it never gets cold and don't have glass windows because it is easier to have the breeze inside without glas. We pass a MOrmon temple and a cemeterey and learn that there are different cemeteries für die Fidschians, the Chinese and the military people.
Einmal angekommen, können wir uns zwischen einer kleinen Tour (8 Minuten), einer mittleren Tour (25 Minuten)und einer langen Tour (45 Minuten entscheiden. Leider haben sie vergessen zu sagen, dass alle Touren steil bergauf und bergab (über notdürftig befestigte Stufen, an Hängen ohne Sicherung und über glitschige Pfade) führen. Ich hatte etwas blauäugig die lange Tour gewählt, und kam dann recht schnell in Schweiß, aber es war wunderschön und hat den Aufwand gelohnt, wie die Fotos eindeutig belegen.
Once we got there we had to decide if we wanted to take the short tour (8 min), the medium tour (25 min) or the long tour (45 min). What they forgot to mention was that all tours were mostly steep stairs up and down, and messy paths). I decided on the long tour and pretty soon was taught a lesson. But I didn't regret it. It wos wonderful as the pictures show!

Auf dem Weg zurück sehen wir noch zwei Schüler in Schuluniformen und jede Menge dieser eng aneinanderstehenden Hütten, die hier in den ärmeren Dörfern üblich sind.
On our way back we see two students in school uniforms and many of those houses that are close to eayhother and are quite common in the poorer villages.

American Samoa
Heute ist wieder Schnorcheln angesagt. Für unglaubliche 369 Euro, und ich schreibe das auf, damit ich es nicht vergesse, geht es über die Insel in eine Bucht und ich darf über ein Korallenriff schnorcheln. Wunderbar, wunderbar, wunderbar. Schnorcheln macht mir wirklich viel Spaß. Ich sehe jede Menge bunter Fische, eine geöffnete Riesenmuschel, das Korallenriff und seine Pflanzen. Davon gibt es natürlilch keine Fotos, dafür aber von der Fahrt.
Today I have booked another snorckeling tour. I payed unbelievably much money: 369 Euros in order to ride on a bus to a bay with a coral reef where I get to snorchel, and I love it. I see fish of all different sizes and colors, a gigantic clam that is open, the coral reef and its plants. I did not take pictures of that, but I have some nice ones of the tour.

Hier haben wir geschnorchelt
This is where we went snorkeling
Wir werden von netten Saoanerinnen und Samoanern empfangen und eingewiesen: Keine Kanus, keine Flossen, Hier ist ein Schutzgebiert für bedrohte Riesenmuscheln, also bitte ncht auf die Korallen stellen. Taucherbrillen und Schwimmwesten liegen für uns bereit. Es gibt drei Begleiter/innen vom Schiff, aber keine/n der/die deutsch spricht, also übersetze ich, was ich gern tue. Die ersten stürmen schon ins Wasser uns müssen zurückgerufen werden, weil wir (wie unsb ereits mitgeteilt wurde) immer den Anweisungen der Begleitungen folgen sollen Also zurück auf null. Einige wollen keine Schwimmwesten tragen, andere unbedingt ihre flossen mitnehmen. Ich bewundere die Geduld der Samoanerin, die sich allen diesen Problemen professionell und immer freundlich widmet. Dann geht es endlich los. Der "erfahrene Taucher" rutscht noch auf der Betontreppe aus und fällt der LÄnge nach hin. Das hällt wieder alle auf, und mein Mitgefühl hält sich in Grenzen. Aber endlich sind wir alle im Wasser und können loslegen. Ich bin schon etwas sicherer als beim ersten Mal und genieße es unglaublauch. Es ist so still und so fremd unter Wasser. Am Ende bin ich aber doch erschöpft, auch weil es eine starke Strömung gibt (Ebbe) und werde einmal an das Korallenriff geschleudert. Enttsprechend trage auch ich kleinere Schürfwunden dabon (ich hätte an land schwimmen sollen, als die Kraft nachließ...), aber alles halb so schlimm, und ich lehne sowohl die Antibiotikasalbe als auch den Arztbesuch an Schiff freundlich ab, es heilt auch schon wieder, also alles gut. Die Unterwasserwelt war bunt, die Fische munter. Ich bin glückich und freue mich auf Sidney, wo ich am Barriere Reef schnorcheln werde!
We are intodruced to the equipment and the rules: No canoes today, no snorkeling away from our hosts, no swimming fins, :-), life vests and snorkeling gear is available (I have my own. This is a protective area for some gigantic clams, so please follow the instructions. The first person is already in the water and has to be called in again, so it's back to square 1 with the instructions. then someone claims to be an experienced diver and refuses to wear a vest and insists on taking his fins - and he is the one to slip on the stairs even bevfore we get in the water and hurts himself, so another delay. I wonder why it is so hard to be respectful in situations that we obviously are not familiar with. Finally we all get in the water and the underwater world opens up for us. I feel a little less insecure, because it's my second time and enjoy the sights. corals and fish so colorful, it's breathtaking and I enjoy every second of it. Finally I get tired because there is a strong tidal flow which eventually throws me against the corals (I should have taken my exhaustion more serious), Small cuts, no problem, I don't even notice the bleeding before I leave the water. I just loved the colors of the fish and the stillness under water and am looking forward to the snorkeling at the Barriere Reef in Sysdney!

Und wir lernen, dass man hier als Grundstücksbesitzer seine Toten direkt am Haus beerdigen darf. Es gibt also jede Menge Gräber am Straßenrand, die einem allerdings auch erst auffallen, wenn man es weiß.
We also learn that you may bury your loved ones on your property. so there are many graves in front of the houses which you only notice once you know it..
Ich weiß nicht, wie ich mich fühlen würde, wenn ich jeden Morgen beim Verlassen des Hauses erst an meinen Eltern vorbei müsste - Ganz abgesehen davon wäre in meiner Familie sicher die zuklärende Frage: Wer kriegt sie?!? Wäre sicher eine interessante Diskussion.
I don't know how I would feel, if I had to go by my parents grave every morning while leaving the house (maybe not so strange for Americans who cary ashes of the deceased with them) - Also: In my familiy the question to be discussed would be: Who gets them?!? Probably an interestin diskussion!

Diese Mal als Begleitung für den hawaiianischen Künstler Erwin G. Urbi (dass er Erwin heißt, hat nichts zu bedeuten, seine Mutterfand den namen in einem Buch :-). Das Lied wird wenig überraschen, aber es war trotzdem (oder vielleicht deshalb) bewegend und hat Spaß gemacht.

Am Valentinstag haben sie das ganze Schiff in ein Riesenherz verwandelt und z.B. die Handtücher in Herzform aufgestellt. Das war natürlich nett, aber irgendwie für meinen dann doch etwas nüchternen westfälischen Verstand ein bisschen zu viel...

Fünf Seetage
Five days at see
Fünf Seetage - heute ist der vierte, zwischen Hawaii und Samoa. Die Lage ist ernst aber nicht hoffnungslos, m.a.W. ich habe meinen Vorrat an buddhistischer Tiefenentspannung (Zitat eines meiner früheren Vorgesetzten), Selbstberuhigung (Zitat meiner langjährigen Therapeutin) und (Galgen-)Humor (meine eigenen Worte) so langsam aufgebraucht. Ich versuche mal aufzuschreiben, woran das liegt und was sonst noch so passiert ist - also viele Worte und wenig Fotos.
Five days at sea - today is the fourth, Hawaii and Samoa. The situation is somehow serious, but not hopeless, in other words, I have almost used up my stock of buddhist deep relaxation (citing one of my former chefs), self-soothing (citing my longstanding therapist) and (gallows-) humor (my very own words). I will try to describe why annoys me and what else happened - so it'll be many words and few photos.

Schon vor Hawaii konnte ich die Erkältung im Anmarsch spüren - die zweite. Hat vermutlich was mit den vielen Menschen auf engem Raum zu tun (oder damit, die Nase voll zu haben) , und ich bin nicht die einzige, aber: Es hat mich schwer erwischt dieses mal, und ich laboriere schon seit Tagen damit rum. Zwar wird es langsam besser, aber ich bin unleidlich, wenn ich Schnupfen und Husten habe, und bleibe lieber in der Kabine, was aber nach vier Tagen auch so langsam richtig öde wird.
Even before Hawaii I could feel that I was getting a cold again - the second one on this trip. Probably because of so many people in such a small space (or because I am a little bit fed up), and I am obviously not the only one, but still: It was really bad with a running nose and a bad cough for days. It is slowly getting better, but I am in a bad mood, when I have a cold, because I can't breathe and have to cough, which I cannot control, so I prefer to stay in my cabin. Imagine how boring that gets after four days.
Kein Sport
No sports
Wegen der Erkältung bin ich seit vier Tagen nicht im Fitness-Studio gewesen, was mir die Möglichkeit nimmt, den Stress abzuarbeiten. Auch nicht gerade hilfreich!
Because of my cold I couldn't workout for the last four days, Working out helps me to cope with stress, so not being able to do that has noct been easy for me!
Scheißwetter
It's damp and hot
Wir haben den Äquator überquert (nicht das erste Mal für mich) und das Wetter wird zunehmend wieder heiß und feucht, und das mag ich überhaupt nicht. Die Klimaanlage in meiner Kabine lässt sich - was mich angeht, nicht gut einstellen, und so ist mir entweder kalt und die Luft ist trocken (dann mache ich die Balkontür auf) oder heiß und schwül (dann mache ich die Balkontür zu). Alles nicht so richtig angenehm, noch dazu, wenn man erkältet ist.
We have crossed the equator (which was not the first time for me, so no excitement there), and the weather becomes more and more hot and damp again, which I do not like at all. I cannot really control the air conditioning in my cabin, so it is either cold and dry, which makes me cough (and then I open the door to my balcony) or it is hot and damp (then I close the door to my balcony). All of that is not really good, when you have a cold!
Netflix funktioniert nicht

Ich habe mehrere tausend Euros dafür bezahlt, dass ich nicht nur einen Zugang zum Internet habe, sondern auch "browsen und streamen" kann, und dann erwartet mich an Bord eine Karte, auf der schon eingezeichnet ist, wo zu sehen ist, wo der Internetempfang schlecht ist (war natürlich vorher nie die Rede von). Außerdem scheint es Regionen zu geben, in denen Netflix accounts nur funktioniere, wenn man bestimmte accounts gekauft hat - war natürlich vorher auch nie die Rede von. Da fühle ich mich leicht verarscht und vor allen Dingen abezockt!
I have payed several thousand dollars so that I not only have access to the internet but can also browse and stream, and then upon arrival on the ship I find a map in my room which tells me ahead in which regions of the world I should expect problems with the internet. Of course they didn't tell me that before I bought the package. Also it turns out that my Netflix account isn't working everywhere. So can someone please tell me, what I payed for? I feel ripped off.

Ich tue mich schwer, zu beschreiben, was mich an "den Anderen" stört, aber momentan trägt das doch erheblich zu meinem Unbehagen bei, also werde ich es mal versuchen - ohne irgendwen zu beleidigen: Mit dieser Reise habe ich mich eheblich aus meiner Blase entfernt, und das ist in vielerlei Hinsicht hart. Zum einen wegen des Verhaltens und der Einstellungen, mit denen ich konfrontiert werde und die ich zu ertragen habe, und zum anderen wegen der ständigen Erinnerung daran, dass meine Blase eben auch nur eine Blase ist - und ich weiß schon, dass hier auf dem Schiff auch nur eine Blase ist - aber eben eine andere. Wir alle ertragen einander, weil es gerade nicht anders geht und weil wir ziviliert sind, aber die Decke ist dünn - leider auch bei mir. Ich wünsche mir, ich könnte respektvoller damit umgehen, dass Menschen (aus meiner Perspektive) unreflektiert Fleisch und Fisch konsumieren, Alkohol trinken, über die Regierung schimpfen und sich im selben Atemzug darüber beschweren, dass es zu wenig Fußpfleger/innen an Bord gibt und man den Schiffsarzt zunächst bezahlen muss obwohl man doch versichert ist, und, und und. Da ist so wenig Bereitschaft, mal eine andere Perspekitve einzunehmen, aber bin ich besser? Wenn ich mich hier über "die Anderen" beschwere, mache ich dann nicht genau das Gleiche?
Puh, das ist nicht einfach, aber die Essenz ist dann wohl Fass Dich an die eigene Nase, Friederike, und vielleicht kann das helfen: über die eigenen Ressentiments drüberspringen und stattdessen zu verstehen versuchen, warum Menschen so sind.
Und wieder regelmäßig meditieren!
I am having a hard time to talk about what bothers me, but right now that makes me really uneasy so I will try to describe it without hurting anybody else:
By taking this trip I have left my bubble and that hurts in several ways: On way is of course to have to watch "the other's" behavior which I so resent internally and another is the constant reminder that my bubble is nothing else than exactly that: a bubble - just a different one. Me and "the others", we endure eachother because we have to and because we think of ourselves as being civilized, but the cover is thin - unfortunatly that is true for me, too. I wish I could deal more respectfully with people, who do not reflect upon their consumption of meat, drink so much alcohol, complain at the same time about the government and the fact that there are not enough pedicures available on bord or the fact that they have to pay the doctor although they are insured, and so on and so forth. There is so little willingness to take the other's perspective, but am I better? When I complain about "the others", am I not doing the same thing?
That's not easy to admit, but then the essence is probably: Geuer, take a little of your own medicine (even if it is bitter) and maybe that helps. Jump over you own biases, be kind and try to understand, why people are the way they are!

An Bord werden verschiedenen dieser Touren angeboten, bei denen man dafür bezahlt, dass man in wenige ausgewählte Bereiche geführt wird, die man sonst nie sehen würde, u.a. Brücke und Maschinenkontrollraum. Hab ich natürlich sofort gebucht, und hatte auch Glück: Ich war in der ersten Gruppe, die auf die Brücke gelassen wurde. Das war insofern gut, als dass die Offiziere, die uns empfingen, ungefähr so aufgeregt waren wie wir, weil sie noch keine Routinen entwickelt hatten. Das war im Vergleich zu allen anderen Touren, die ich bislang mitgemacht habe, unglaublich erfrischend, den sie waren so stolz auf ihr Schiff! Wir wurden mit Informationen über Sonar, Radar, Maschinenstärken, Schiffsschrauben, Seitenrudern, Kontrollfunktionen und Sicherheitsmaßnahmen nur so bombardiert, und es war schön zu sehen und zu fühlen, wie sehr sie es genossen, mal direkt mit Passagieren in Kontakt zu kommen und diesen ihr wunderbares Schiff vorzustellen. Man durfte nicht fotografieren und wurde auch vorher gescannt (Handys und Kameras mussten zurück auf's Zimmer gebracht werden). Hier mal ein paar Infos, die hängengeblieben sind:
On bord you can book several tours where you pay for being guided through some areas that you wouldn't be able to see otherwise, i.e. the bridge and theroom where they control the engines. I booked it right away and was lucky to be in the very first group that was allowed on the bridgt. That was wonderful, because the officers that talked to us were almost as excited as we werd because they hadn't had the time to develop any routines. That was extremely refreshing in comparison to all the other tours I have taken so far, because they were so proud of their ship. We were being bombarded with facts about sonar, radar, machine power, side rudders, controll functions and safety measures, and it was so much fun to see and feel, how much they enjoyed it to be in direct contact with passengers and present their wonderful ship. We were not allowed to take pictures and that was controlled (people who brought cell phones had to return these to their cabins vefore the tour). Here are some infos that I remember:
Raumschiff - Space ship
Sowohl Brücke als auch Maschinenkontrollraum sahen mehr wie Kommandozentralen eines Raumschiffs aus einem Film aus: Es gab tatsächlich solche höhergelegten Stühle, von denen aus man einen guten Überblick hatte, unendlich viele verschiedene Computer und Computerbildschirme, Telefone und andere Kommunikationssysteme. Aber es gab auch Ferngläser und unser Offizier erklärte, dass man sich am Ende des Tages auf sein Augenlicht verließe (daher natürlich eine Besetzungmit mindestens drei Personen rund um die Uhr in Vierstundenschichten.
The bridge as well as the engine control room resemble to what movies show us of spaceships and that's probably what they copied. There are those higher chairsthat look extremely comfortable to sit in an watch everything, countless computers and screens for the different controll systems, plans and maps, telefones and other communication systems. But there were also binoculars and our officer told us that when things become serious they still rely mainly on their eyesight.
Wale - Whalesightings
Sobald Wale gesichtet werden, muss das Sonar ausgestellt werden, um die Wale nicht in ihrer Kommunikation zu stören.
As soon as a whale appears the sonar has to be turned of in order not to disturb the wales communications system.
Seitenruder - rudders on the sides
Seitenruder befinden sich in der Mitte des Schiffes und drei Meter unter der Wasseroberfläche, sie werden bei Bedarf bis zu acht Meter lang ausgefahren, helfen dann, das Schiff bei Wellengang zu stabilisieren (funktioniert wunderbar, aber da ich nichts über die Kräfte von Wellen weiß, habe ich keine Ahnung, wie das funktioniert).
Side rudders are located in the middle of the ship, about three meters under the sea level. When needed they cn be extended up to 8 meters and then help to stabilize the ship in case of high waves (works perfectly but since I don't know anything about the power of waves I have no idea how that works).
Hirn und Herz - brain and heart
Die Brücke ist das Hirn und der Maschinenraum das Herz des Schiffes, und sie stehen permanent in Kontakt miteinander.Vor jeder Änderung der Maschinen braucht es zwei Stunden Vorbereitung, Wow!
The bridge is the brain, and the engines are the heart of the ship and they constantly communicate with eachother. Before anything is changed it takes two hours of preparations. Wow!
Brücke - bridge
Die Brücke ist auf meinem Deck (12) obwohl es noch drei höhere Decks gibt, keine Ahnung, warum das so ist. Mn hat einen wunderbren Blick, sauber Fenster über über so ziemlich die gesamte Breite des Schiffs und zur Seite (kann man auf dem Foto sehen). Echt cool!
The bridge is on deck 12 (which is the deck where my cabin is), although there are three more decks above. No idea why that is. You have a wonderful view because there are clean windows that cover alomost oll of the width of the ship and the sides (you can see those windows in the photo above.

Hawaii
Hawaii hatte eine wunderbare Ausstrahlung, obwohl es immer wieder heftigst geregnet hat (265 Tage im Jahr sagt die Statistik), aber vermutlich deswegen ist es grün, grün, grün, und ich fühle mich in der Natur sehr wohl (das andere ignoriere ich).
Hawaii has a wonderful charisma in spite of the fact that there are several heavy rains throughout the day (265 days a year as the statistics say). But probably because of that it is green, green, green and I feel very welcome in its nature (and ignore the rest).
Die "Matchbos-Autos" mit dem Treibstoff warten schon. Später lerne ich, dass es tatsächlich Benzin ist und wir 600 l tanken (das ist nix, weil die Machinen, wenn sie Volldampf fahren bis zu 8 Tonnen pro Stunde brauchen.
The trucks with the gazoil are already waiting. As I learn later it is actually gazoil they are bringing and we get 600 l which is nothing as the engine uses up to 8 tons when going full speed.
Und dann sind wir auch schon bei unserem ersten Stop im Japanischen Garten.

Das ist ein Banban-Baum. Er Entwickelt Luftwurzeln, die bis auf die Erde reichen und sich dann in Stammnähe verwurzeln, so dass ältere Bäume wir kleine Wäldchen aussehen.
This is a Banban-tree. They develop air-roots which go into the ground and let the tree look like it's many small trees.
Für die Statue von König Kamehameha, der 1810 die Inseln zu einem Königreich vereinigte, bin ich gr nicht erst ausgestiegen - zu viel Regen. Wenigstens kann man das im Foto sehen.
For the statue of King Kamehameha, who united the islands in 1810 I didn't even leave the bus - too much rain, as you can see in the picture!
Am sunshine waterfall
Es regnet immer noch heftig, aber ich finde den Wasserfall wunderschön. Normalerweise lassen mich Wasserfälle eher kalt, da stürzt halt eine Mange Wasser irgendwo runter, und das ist laut und irgendwie gewaltvoll, aber hier kann man sehen, wie der Fluss sich durch die Landschaft schlängelt, bevor er dann doch abstürzt, und das ist schön. Außerdem gibt es auch hier wieder jede Menge wunderbarer Bäume. Ich lehne meine Hand an einen feuchten Stamm und kann die Energie spüren, die in ihm steckt.
It is still raining heavily, but I really like this waterfall. Normally waterfalls do not impress me very much. A lot of water falling down making a lot of noise. What's the deal? But here I can see how the river meanders through nature and I can almost feel how it is exploring nature for a way forward until it finally finds it and actually falls. Also there are wonderful trees again. I touch the wet trunk of a tree and can feel the energy inside.
Macadamia Nüsse -Macadamia nuts
I love macadamia nuts!
Deshalb muss ich auch für 40 Euro Nüsse kaufen. Aber sie schmecken himmlisch.
Therefore I have to spend $40 on nuts, but they do taste wonderful, especially the ones with dill. They remind me of Doris's dillycrackers.
So sieht ein Macadamia-Baum aus. Er braucht 7 Jahre, bis er Früchte trägt, und man kann die Nüsse nicht pflücken, sondern muss warten, bis sie zu Boden fallen.
This is a macadamia-nut tree. It needs seven years before it bears any fruit and even then you cannot pick the nuts but have to wait until they fall to the ground.

Nachtrag Los Angeles
Addendum LA
Was darf - natürlich - nicht fehlen, wenn man Los Angeles besucht? Genau - die Hollywood-Schaukel, das Klichee schlechthin. Aber es gibt sie wirklich hier am Containerhafen (und dieser Pullover ist der erste, den ich auf dieser Reise gestrickt habe)!
We call this kind of swing in Germany a "Holliwood-Swing". So it was really funny to find it in Los Angeles (and this is the first sweater that I knitted on this cruise)!

Der Aufenthalt in LA hat mir nicht gefallen. Das lag aber an einer Reihe von Gründen, die gar nichts mit LA zu tun hatten, wie ich jetzt beim Aufarbeiten feststelle:
1. Wir lagen in einem Containerhafen sehr weit weg von allem, was vielleicht interessant gewesen wäre, und man hätte viel Geld für ein Uber oder ein Taxi ausgeben müssen, um irgendwo anders hinzukommen.
2. Meine gebuchte Tour war Scheisse, weil sie nur den Rodeo Drive und das Santa Monica Pier umfasste, das hatte ich nicht gut ausgewählt (Die Führerin war aber prima und hat viel rausgerissen).
3. Wir sind bei der Tour viel Bus gefahren, und neben mir saß ein furchtbar hustender Mann, der nicht mal die Hand vor den Mund hielt (entsprechend hat er mir seine Erkältung prompt weitergegeben, und ich habe jetzt immer eine Maske im Rucksack für künftige Situationen wie diese).
4. Bei den Touren herrscht insgesamt immer eine angespannte Atmosphäre, man kommt nicht mit anderen in Kontakt, was natürlich umso blöder ist, je blöder die Tour ist. Ich erkläre mir das damit, dass alle unsicher sind, wenn sie das Schiff verlassen müssen.
Es sind aber trotzdem interessante Erinnerungen und schöne Fotos dabei rausgekommen.
I didn't ike LA or rather our stay in LA. As I reflect on it the reasons for that did not really have that much to do with LA:
1. The ship anchored in a Containerport. There was not much there except for containers.
2. The tour I booked was not very interesting. It only contained a long busdrive and stops on Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, and the Santa Monica Pier. I hadn' chosen well.
3. On the bus (and there was a lot of riding on the bus) a man sat next to me who was constantly coughing without even holding his hand in front of his mouth (as a consequence I caught my second cold on this trip and now have a mask in my backpack).
4. On the tours there is always a lot of tension, maybe everybody has some insecurities about being off the ship in yet another country where they don't understand the people, I don't really know, but as a consequence I am pretty lonely and cannot easily ask things when I am not sure that I got it right, which I sometimes need.
In spite of all that there were some nice sights and some nice pictures as I discover now.
Wir sind eine Riesenschleife gefahren, um von San Diego nach LA zu kommen und haben für eine Strecke von 2 Stunden mit dem Auto 1 1/2 Tage gebraucht. Ich habe versucht, rauszubekommen, warum, und unterschiedliche Antworten von unterschiedlilchen Leuten bekommen (außer von Reiseleiter Dieter, der hat mal wieder nix getan).
1. Die direkte Route war für ein Schiff unserer Größe nicht befahrbar.
2. Auch Routen müssen gebucht (und bisweilen bezahlt) werden, und an diese Buchung muss man sich halten. Da die Route geändert wurde (LA statt San Francisco) mussten wir einen Teil der Route beibehalten
3. Man darf seinen organischen Abfall nur an bestimmten Stellen ins Meer kippen, daher der Umweg.
Ich mag diese Intransparenz nicht!
As you can see we took a gigantic detour from San Diego to LA (1 1/2 days by ship for a 2 hour drive)
I tried to find out why this happened and got many different explanations from different people.
1. the direct route was too shallow for our ship.
2. Some routes need to be booked and payed for and those routes need to be taken. Since we changed from SanFrancisco to LA we took this route.
3. You may only get rid of your organic trash into the sea in certain areas therefore the detour.
I don't like this intransparency!

Wir lernen, dass Beverly Hills eine eigenständige Stadt innerhalb von LA ist, die sich diesen Status auch nicht nehmen lassen will. Außerdem lernen wir, dass die ganz linke Spur für Autos reserviert ist, in denen mehr als eine Person sitzt, und dass es mehrere 100 Dollar Strafe kostet, wenn man als Alleinfahrer/in diese Spur benutzt und dass die vorderen Seitenscheiben nicht getönt sein dürfen, damit dies kontrolliert werden kann. Im übrigen ist die breiteste Straße in LA jeweils 7spurig (also insgesamt 14 Spuren), und es gibt hier schon alleinfahrende Taxis, sogenannte Waymos, die ich leider nicht fotografiert bekomme, weil ich so weit hinten im Bus sitze.

Schola cantorum (Schule des Singens), - (singing school)
Es gibt an Bord einen Chor, die Schola cantorum, was ich natürlich total schön finde. Er probt nur an Seetagen, und dann auch nur 45 Minuten, aber das ist mir natürlich egal. Singen zu können ist wunderbar. Wir treffen uns in der größten Bar und singen ganz überwiegend unisono, aber 100 bis 120 Menschen machen auch unisono schon was her.
Mit acht Liedern sind wir nachmittags aufgetreten, und es soll auch noch mehr Auftritte geben. Für die Noten haben sie uns eine Mappe gegeben. Hier wird Unterhaltung eben in jeglicher Hinsicht ernst genommen :-).
There is a choir on bord, the schola cantorum and I think that is great. Rehearsals are only on days spent at sea and last only 45 minutes, but I don't care. I so enjoy it to sing. We meet in the biggest bar and sing mostly unisono, but 100 to 120 people sound impressing anyway.
With eight songs we performed on the big stage (the royal theatre) and there will be more performances. For the sheets they gave us a folder (see photo). They really do take entertainment seriously on this ship. :-).

San Diego, USA, Tag 2 - day 2
Ich treffe mich mit Diana, meiner Nichte, die seit 20 Jahren in Californien lebt. Sie wohnt mit ihren beiden Kindern, Emilia und Luca in San Jose, das ist bei San Francisco, und kommt für den Tag nach San Diego geflogen. Das klingt natürlich supercool (und ist es auch)!
Wir treffen uns bei Starbucks, und ich spüre, wie sehr ich mich freue, sie zu sehen. Ich habe eine Unmenge von Nichten und Neffen, und während ich in meinem kleinen Universum auf Zeit ein bisschen damit angebe, dass ich sie treffe, wird mir klar, dass ich sie alle mag, und froh bin, sie immer mal wieder zu treffen, und das wärmt mir das Herz.
Today I will spend the day with Diana, my niece, who moved to California 20 years ago and lives in San Jose, which is somewhere close to San Francisco, with her two children Emilia and Luca. In order to see me she had do fly into San Diego for the day and that sounds pretty cool, when you say or write it - and it is!
We meet at Starbucks and while waiting for her I can feel how happy I am to see her. I have many nieces and nephews, and while boasting a little in my small temporary universe about meeting her, I realize that I like all of them and am happy to meet with them from time to time and how blessed I feel to be able to say that.
In diesem Café, kaum als Starbucks erkennbar, treffen wir uns. Ich hatte es eigentlich in der Annahme ausgesucht, dass es weltweit kein Starbucks ohne Toilette gäbe - kleiner Irrtum! "Wir teilen uns die Toilette mit der Straßenbahnhaltestelle um die Ecke". Das waren zwei, eine abgeschlossen und eine nicht abschließbar. Wegen meines Darmproblems muss ich die nicht abschließbare nehmen - noch nie so schnell... und einmal gebrüllt "Occupied". Aber am Ende ist alles erledigt.
This is where we meet. NO toilet, I couldn't believe it. " We share the toilet with the busstop". One locked, one not lockable. I have to..., so I take the unlockable. I have never in my live ... so fast! And once I had to yell "occupied". But in the end I am successful and so happy to see Diana.

Wir hben uns so viel zu erzählen und gehen erst mal frühstücken. Ich bekomme die Eggs benedict, auf die ich schon seit einiger Zeit scharf bin, und ich esse sie, obwohl ich nicht sicher bin, ob mein Verdauungssystem das schon wieder mitmacht (spoiler alert: Sie werden klaglos akzeptiert). So nebenbei erledigen wir ein paar Einkäufe, und ich bin froh, dass Diana immer genau wei, in welche Läden wir gehen müssen und per Handy zack zack herausfindet, wo diese sind. Irgendwann wollen wir raus aus der Stadt und Diana - bestens vorbereitet - besorgt in Nullkommanix ein Uber-Auto, das uns zum Pacific Beach bringt.
We have so much to tell eachother in order to catch up and so we go having breakfast. I order eggs benedict that I've been dying to have for some time. I eat them in spite of my digestion-problems (spoiler alert: no problem). On the side we do some shopping and I am so relieved that Diana always knows wha store to look for and where to find it . Finlly we get tired of the city and take an Uber to Pacific Beach.

...und barfuß. Ich glaube, das ist das erst Mal in meinem Leben, dass ich meine Füße in den Pazifik halte. Diana quietscht, weil es ihr zu kalt ist, aber ich bin glücklich.
...and barefoot. I think, it's the first time in my life that I can put my feet in the Pacific Ocean. Diana squeaks because for her it's too cold, but I am happy.

San Diego, USA, Tag 1 - day 1
Dieser Tag war eigentlich für Guatemala vorgesehen, aber es war gut, dass wir ihn hatten, denn: Die US-Amerikaner bestehen darauf, dass alle (inklusive Personal - also auch die, die die USA gar nicht betreten wollen) von Bord gehen und Pässe und Visa vorzeigen, sich fotografieren lassen und ihre Fingerabdrücke abgeben. Wenn das Schiff leer ist, inspizieren sie es, und es darf erst wieder betreten werden, wenn sie es freigeben. Das bedeutet, dass jeder ein Visum haben muss, und dass das natürlich fast einen ganzen Tag in Anspruch nimmt. Wir müssen uns schon Tage vorher ein "Ticket" besorgen, dass uns einer Gruppe zuteilt und eine Uhrzeit zuweist. Ich bin in Gruppe 21 (von 24) und soll mich ab 12:30 bereithalten. Gegen 3 Uhr bin ich durch und bereits voll genervt.
This is the day that was originally to be spent in Guatemala, but it was good to have it because the US American authorities forced everyone (including personnel and people who do not even want to enter US grounds) to go through immigration formalilties, show passport and visa and have a picture and fingerprints taken. When the ship is empty they will inspect it and only when they allow it personnel and passengers may return. It takes almost a day to meet these requierements. Several days ahead we have to get a "ticket" that assigns us to a group (mine is 21 out of 24) and a time ( I am to be ready by 12:30). Around three I may enter US grounds and am more than upset (interestingly they did not take my fingerprints - probably because by now they should have something like 17 sets of them lol).
Martina und ich suchen den Hop-on-hop-off-Bus, den wir aber nicht finden, irren einbisschen durch downtown, das einigermaßen langweilig ist, und enden schließlich in einer Kneipe mit vielen verschiedenen Bieren, wo Martina eine Riesenportion Nachos bekommt und wir auch noch andere Leute vom Schiff treffen. Da wir draußen an einer Theke in einer Reihe sitzen, kriege ich nix von den Gesprächen der anderen mit und betrachte die Gegend. Hier gibt es ganz überwiegend Elektroautos, und die Motorräder fallen noch unangenehmer auf als sonst. Am Ende bin ich froh, als wir zumSchiff zurückkehren.
Martina and I look for the hop-on-hop-off-bus which we don't find, circle around downtown which is pretty boring and end up in a restaurant/bar with many many differents beers where we meet some other people from the ship. Because we sit at the bar in a row I do not get much of the conversation and watch the surrounding: There are mostly electric cars so the motorcycles that drive by are even more of a hassle than normaly. In the end I am happy to go back to the ship.
I versuche, Martina zu erklären, dass man in den USA vom Stil eines Hauses nicht auf sein Alter schließen kann, aber sie glaubt mir nicht - ist aber zu höflich, um es zu sagen.
I try to explain to Martina that in the US you cannot tell the age of a house by the style, but she doesn't believe me, but she is too polite to say so.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico...
...den Tag habe ich mehr oder weniger in der Nähe einer Toilette an Bord verbacht. Ausflug mit Kamelen musste ich absagen, aber...
...I spent the day more ore less close to a toilet on board. The camel riding I had to cancel, but...
...morgens noch vor dem Einlaufen in den Hafen werde ich davon geweckt, dass mein Kabinennachbar, ein Amerikaner, seine Frau anbrüllt: Whales, Whales. Ich natürlich sofort mit Kamera auf den Balkon gesprungen und tatsächlich ein Bild hinbekommen. Abends beim Auslaufen war ich dann schon schlauer und habe mich direkt auf die Lauer gelegt. Die Bilder sind natürlich nicht allzu gut, aber immerhin - und es war natürlich ein wunderbares Erlebnis.
...before entering the harbour I woke up to my neighbour (an American) yelling at his wife: "whales, whales!" I took my camera and stumbled onto the balcony and there they were! I managed to take a picture and when leaving Cabo San Lucas I was a little bit smarter and waited for them, so I got some more pictures. Not the best, but still! A wonderful experience to see these animals.

...aber das war's dann auch. Ich kann nicht mal sagen, dass ich traurig bin oder denke, etwas verpasst zu haben. Diese Reise ist so übervoll von Eindrücken, da reicht es für jemanden wie mich eigentlich schon, echte Wale im echten Pazifik zu sehen.
...and that was it. I can't even say that I was sad oder think to have missed out on something. This journey is so overflowing with impressions that for someone like me it is quite enough for one day to have seen real whales in the real Pacific Ocean.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexiko
Erstmal waren wir drei Tage auf See, und das war auch gut so. Die Seetage brauche ich, um meine Erlebnisse und Fotos für diese Seite aufzubereiten. Ich halte mich dann überwiegend in meiner Kabine auf, weil mir alles andere zu viel ist: Die Menschen, die Lautstärke, die ndauernde Beschallung, die vielen Vergnügungsangebote, von denen ich nur die Landausflüge und den Chor wahrnehme, und und und. Kein Wunder, dass ich passend zum Stop in Mexiko von einem anständigen Anfall von Montezumas Revenge heimgesucht wurde. Entgegen allen Appellen, sich bei Durchfallerkrankungen sofort den Schiffsarzt aufzusuchen, behandele ich den Durchfall selbständig mit Tannacomp, das ich auf Imkes Rat hin mitgenommen habe, ohne irgendeine offizielle Stelle zu informieren. Ich habe aber auch nicht das Gefühl, dass es sich um einen Virus handelt. Eher die Reaktion meines Magen-Darm-Trakts auf all die vielen fremden Lebensmittel, ich bin eigentlich eher erstaunt, dass es mich nicht schon viel früher erwischt hat. Tannacomp funktionert jedenfalls gut, und so konnte ich heute meinen Ausflug "Begegnung mit Delfinen" gut absolvieren, und hoffe, dass ich auch morgen das Kamelreiten genießen kann. Eigentlich hätten wir vor Mexiko noch einen Stop in Guatemala gehabt, aber der wurde abgesagt, weil es dort politische Unruhen gab (interessanterweise wurde darüber an meinem Tisch nicht gesprochen. Fast habe ich das Gefühl, als müsse das ignoriert werden, weil es das "Ich will mich amüsieren"- Feeling gefährdet).
We were three days on the Atlantik to get from Costa Rica to Mexico. We cancelled the stop in Guatemala because of political instabilities there (interestingly this was not discussed among the participants; it seems to me that it needs to be ignored because it would be a threat to the "I-want-to-have-fun" feeling.)
Anyway, I have come to like the seadays and use them so put my photos and my experiences into the computer. I mostly spend those days in my cabin, because everything else is too much for me: The people, the noise, the music, the entertainment possibilities, of which I only use the landtrips and the choir. No wonder, I am having a severe attack of Montezuma's revenge (diarrhea) that I am treating with pills from Imke. All the papers say that you are supposed to inform the health officials , but I didn't do that, because the pills work just fine and I don't think, it's a virus, but rather my stomach's reaction to the foreign food, so I am surprised I made it so long without any diarrhea. The important news is that I could take part in today's trip of meeting with dolphins and am hopeful that I'll be able to ride the camels tomorrow in the desert with no problems. We'll see about that.

Wir werden ernsthaft und eindringlich instruiert. Möglichst unbeweglich am Beckenrand stehen, weil die Delfine jede Bewegung spüren, den Anweisungen der Trainerin genau folgen und die Lebewesen respektieren. Es sind zwei: Angel und Merlin, und wir lernen, dass Delphine auch gleichgeschlechtliche Paare bilden. Diese beiden sind 20 und 17 Jahre alt und bereits in Gefangenschaft geboren. Es werden keine Delphine in Freiheit gefangen und dann eingesperrt. Wir müssen einzeln vortreten und dürfen den Delfinen Signale geben. Ich bin die allererste und sehr stolz, dass ich alles richtig mache. Fotos werden von einem professionellen Fotograf gemacht und wir dürfen sie käuflich erwerben, aber selbst das ist in Ordnung, weil wir uns so auf die Delphine konzentrieren können. Sie fühlen sich so unglaublich friedlich an, erinnern mich vom Gefühl her an Faxa, und ich muss weinen, weil ich so berührt bin und erleichtert, dass die Lebewesen hier mit so viel Respekt behandelt werden. Solche Sanftheit habe ich bisher nur bei Giraffen gefühlt.
We are seriously instructed. Stand with your back to the wall, move as little as possible because the dolphins sense all the movements, follow closely the instructions and respect the beings. There are two dolphins in the bassin: Angel and Merlin, and we learn that dolphins also have homosexual relationships. These two are 20 and 17 years old and have been born here. They do not catch dolphins any more and take away their freedom. So we stand at the edge and have to step up individually and give signals to the dolphins. I am the very first and am very proud when I do it all correctly. Photos are being made by a professional photographer, but that feels ok, because it enables us to fully concentrate on the dolphins. They give a feeling of so much peacefulness, they remind me of Faxa and I start to cry because it touches me so much and I am so relieved that the beings are treated with respect here. Such gentleness I have only felt once before in Africa with the giraffes.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Heute legen wir zum zweiten Mal in Costa Rica an. Beide Städte (Puerto Limon in der Karibik und Puntarenas am Atlantic) sind eher kleine und vermutlich unbedeutende, aber es gibt uns die Möglichkeit, ein bisschen ins Landesinnere zu fahren und etwas über Costa Rica zu lernen. Dinge, die mich überraschen und Lust auf mehr machen - aber dafür ist natürlich nicht so richtig Zeit. Das, was mir im Gedächtnis geblieben ist, schreibe ich auf. Bitte nicht vergessen, dass alle Informationen von unserem netten Reiseführer Edwin (sein Großvater hatte einen deutschen Freund) stammen und nicht gegengecheckt wurden)
Today is the second stop in Costa Rica. Both cities (Puerto Limon in the Caribean Sea and Puntarenas at the Atlantic) are probably rather unimportant, but it gives us the opportunitiy to learn about Costa Rica. Facts, which surprise me and make me want to learn more - but of course there isn't enough time. I will write down, what I remember. Please note that all informations came from our nice tourguide Edwin (his grandfather had a German friend) and have not been checked.
Der Name beruht auf einem Missverständnis
The name is due to a mis-understanding
Als die Spanier Costa Rica "entdeckten", wurden sie von den Bewohner/innen für Götter gehalten und mit Geschenken überhäuft. Das führte zu dem (falschen) Eindruck, Costa Rica sei reich, und dem Namen, der "Reiche Küste" bedeutet.
When the Spanish "discovered" Costa Rica, the inhabitants thought they were gods, so they brought them all their treasures, which led to the (wrong) impression that Costa Rica was a rich county, hence the name "rich coast".

Bereits 1948 entschied eine weise Regierung, dass Costa Rica wegen fehlender Bodenschätze über keinerlei politische Relevanz verfüge, und schaffte die Armee ab, um das Geld in Bildung und Gesundheit zu investieren. Eine Folge davon ist, dass Costa Rica neben Cuba das einzige Land mit einer Quote von weniger als 5 % Analphabet/innen ist.
In the year 1948 a wise government here decided that due to missing rare earths Costa Rica had no political relevance in the world and abolished its armee. The money was used for education and health. One consequence is that only less than 5 % of the people here cannot read or write which is comparable only to Cuba in this region of the world.

Wir lernen, dass Costa Rica etwa 21 verschiedene klimatische Zonen hat, darunter den Regenwald am Atlantik, den Trockenwald am Pazifik und den Nebelwald dazwischen. Bananen brauchen viel Wasser, daher gibt es Bananenplantagen auf der Atlantikseite, Kaffee muss im Hochwald angebaut werden, daher gibt es ihn im Mittelteil.
We learn that Costa Rica has approximately 21 different climate zones, among which are the rainforest at the Atlantic coast, the dry forest at the Pacific coast and the foggy forrest inbetween. Bananas need a lot of water so the banana plantations are at the Atlantic coast, whereas coffee grows up high, so you find the coffee plantations in the high parts of Costa Rica.
Der Strand sieht hier auch ganz anders aus, und unser Edwin erläutert, dass die Müllbeseitigung in den Hnäden der jeweiligen Kommune liege und daher natürlich sehr von deren finanziellen Möglichkeiten abhinge. Der meiste Wohlstand liege in Costa Rica nicht am Meer, sondern in dem Mittelteil, und richtig, je weiter wir ins HInterland kommen, umso sauberer wird es.
The beach looks very different and Edwin tells us that waste disposal and cleaning of the environment is part of the city responsibilities and therefore depends on the city's money. The wealthier parts of Costa Rica lie in the middle, and accordingly it becomes cleaner the further away we get from the coast.
Auf solchen Straßen fahren wir etwa eine Stunde während uns Edwin mehr über die Geschichte Costa Ricas erzählt, z.B. dass Costa Rica sich während des Krieges um Nicaragua konsequent herausgehalten habe, und auch den Amerikanern nicht gestattet habe, Truppen hier zu stationieren, weswegen sie mit einem Handelsembargo belegt worden seien. Das sei sehr hart gewesen, denn bis dahin sei Costa Rica der Haupt-Rindfleisch-Lieferant von Mc Donalds gewesen.
We drive on streets like this for about an hour while Edwin tells us more about the history of Costa Rica. During the war in Nicaragua Costa Rica stayed neutral and didn't allow the USA to bring in troops, so the US imposed a trade embargo on Costa Rica which was a big problem because up until then Costa Rica had been the main supplier of beef for Mc Donalds.
Weiter lernen wir, dass das Handelsembargo zu viel Armut und Landverkäufen geführt habe. Es habe aber auch einen positiven Effekt gehabt, die Abholzug des Regenwaldes für die Fleischproduktion habe aufgehört, worüber man heute sehr froh sei.
We also learn that the embargo led to a lot of poverty and selling of land. But it also led to one consequence the country is happy about today: The deforestation of the rainforest in order to produce beef stopped.
Wir werden zu einer Schule gebracht, die ich leider nicht fotografiert habe, die aber sehr modern und schön ausgestattet war, und Edwin erläutert, dass die Regel war, dass jedes Dorf, dass mehr als 5 Kinder hatte, eine Schule bauen musste. Leider habe der Alphabetismus dazu geführt, dass einfache Arbeiten abgelehnt worden seien, weswegen man Gastarbeiter (z.B. aus Nicaragua) habe kommen lassen. Diese seien aber auch in das Schulsystem integriert worden, weswegen deren Kinder die einfachen Tätigkeiten auch nicht mehr hätten machen wollen. Eine Neverendingstory also.
We are being brought to a school, that I didn't take a picture of, but which was very nicely built and equipped, and Edwin tells us that the rule was that every town that had more than 5 children had to build a school. Unfortunately the well educated children didn't want to do the hard work, so they had to bring in workers from other countries, i.e. Nicaragua, which were integrated into the school system, so their children didn't want to do the hard work either. Hier erläutert Edwin dass wegen der Armut die Kinder bereits im Kindesalter einen weiten Rock bekamen, der dann je nach Alter um Säume verlängert wurde, so dass man keinen neuen nähen musste. Wir lernen auch, dass wenig Farben ein Hinweis darauf ist, dass die Frau nicht verheiratet ist.
Edwin tells us that because of the poverty girls would get one of those big skirts early on and as they grew older pieces on the bottom were added so that a new skirt didn't have to be sewn. We also learn that few colors indicate that the girl is not married.
Und schon sind wir wieder auf dem Heimweg, wo wir natürlich noch den obligatorischen Stop zum Erwerb unnötiger Souvenirs einlegen. Ich werde zum zweiten Mal schwach und kaufe ein T-Shirt und Schokolade für 40 Euro.
And here we go back again, but not without stopping at some market to make us buy all the unnecessary souvenirs and taste the coffee. I buy a t-shirt and some chocolate for 40 $.
Wir lernen noch, dass die fehlende Armee (und damit natürlich auch die fehlende Wehrpflicht) viele Aussteiger ins Land gebracht habe, aber das sei kein Problem.
We also learn that because there are no drafts hippies from other countries have come to Costa Rica but that is not viewed as a problem.

Good Bye Costa Rica
Laut Edwin umfasst der Ausdruck Pura Vida 60 % der Sprache in Costa Rica, u.a. zum Begrüßen und Verabschieden. Im Internet (ticotrotter.com) habe ich dazu folgendes gefunden: Die Essenz der Begrifflichkeit jedoch, liegt viel tiefer. Es ist die Dankbarkeit zu leben, das Leben zu genießen und den Fokus auf Negtivitäten im Leben zu vermeiden. Einfach glücklich zu sein und sich auf die positiven Dinge zu konzentrieren. Es ist die Verbundenheit mit der Natur, der Familie, den Freunden, dem Nationalstolz (für Deutsche immer schwer verdaulich). Pura Vida bringt zum Ausdruck, das Leben, die Erde und ihre Geschöpfe zu schätzen.
According zu Edwin, Pura Vida is 60 % of the language in Costa Rica. Amongst others it is used to greet and say Good-bye. The internet told me the following: The essence of Pura Vida is very deep. It's the thankfulness to live, to enjoy life and avoid to focus on the negative aspects. Simply being happy and concentrating on the positive things. It means being connected to nature, family and friends as well as pride in your country (that is always hard for Germans to hear). Pura Vida is an expression of valuing life, the world and all its beings!

Panamakanal
Das Wichtigste zuerst: Der Panamakanal ist gar kein Kanal, sondern eher eine Verbindung zwischen Atlantik und Pazifik: man fährt in eine Bucht, die sich weiter verengt, bis man zu einer Schleusenanlage kommt. Drei Schleusen später (reinfahren, Tor zu, Wasser rein, Tor auf, weiter zur nächsten) kommt man in einen riesigen, künstlich angelegten See mit viel Natur und Inseln und kaum Zivilisation, den man in mehreren Stunden durchquert. Dann geht es wieder in eine Schleusenanlage (reinfahren, Tor zu, Wasser raus, Tor auf, weiter zur nächsten), und drei Schleusen weiter ist man schon in einer Bucht im Pazifik. Es ist also eher ein riesiges Bauwerk, und das ist als solches natürlich unglaublich beeindruckend, aber das Durchqueren? Eher unspektakulär. Trotzdem schön, weil man einen ganzen Tag fährt und immer etwas zu gucken hat. Das ist natürlich sonst bei Seetagen anders.
The most important insight first: The Panama Canal is not a canal, but rather a passage to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific ocean. You enter through a bay which becomes smaller and smaller until you enter a lock. Three locks later (get in, close doors, put water in, get out to the next one) you enter a gigantic artificial lake with a lot of nature and not much civilistion. It takes a couple of hours to pass through and then you enter locks again (go in, close doors, water out, get out to the next one). Three locks later you are in a bay that leads to the Pacific. It's a remarkable monument and took a lot of planing and building, but riding through? Not very spectacular. It was nice, though, tohave a day "at sea", where there was always something to see. That is different on the normal seadays.

Da ich ja nicht wissen konnte, was als nächstes passiert, habe ich den Tag ganz überwiegend in meiner Kabine verbracht, um Fotos zu machen. So bin ich eine Ruhe gekommen und habe ein wenig reflektieren können. Eigentlich hatte ich mir diese Reise ja als Auszeit gedacht zwischen Arbeitsleben und Rente, um mich neu zu sortieren, aber bislang passiert das ungefähr überhaupt nicht. Das Schiff, die Menschen hier, die Teile der Welt die ich sehe, alles ist einigermaßen überwältigend und ich habe Mühe, Schritt zu halten. Für diesen Zweck wäre wohl ein Kloster besser geeignet gewesen. Aber das ist keine Beschwerde (wie auch, bei dem Geld, das ich für diese Reise ausgegeben habe :-). Aber ernsthaft: Es ist wunderbar, nur eben ganz anders, und ich lerne, dafür zu sorgen, was ich tun muss, um nicht in den vielen Eindrücken zu versinken. Dieses Tagebuch hilft mir dabei, weil es mir ermöglicht, mit Erlebnissen abzuschließen dadurch, dass ich sie aufschreibe. Das schafft Raum für Neues!
Since I couldn't know what was going to happen next I spent most of the day in my cabin to take pictures. That brought me some inner peace and gave me the opportunity to reflect my situation a bit: Originally I had planned this trip in order to have a break between my working life and retirement, but that is not happening at all: The ship, the people, the countries, everything is so overwhelming that I sometimes even have problems to cope. Maybe I should have gone to a monastery... But I am not complaining (and I better not be considering how much money I spent on this trip :-). But seriously: It is really wonderful, just very different from what I expected and I am learning to take care of myself so that it does not overwhelm me. This diary helps because by writing about the experiences I get closure and can make room for new ones!

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica
Um nach Puerto Limon zu gelangen, sind wir tatsächlich einmal an der Öffnung zum Panama Kanal vorbeigefahren. Kein Mensch weiß so genau, warum. Ich vermute, dass es daran liegt, dass wir einen Zeitraum für die Schleusen gebucht haben, den es einzhalten galt. Aber ich beschwere mich nicht: Es gab Hochkantwolken und dann haben wir eine kleine Bootstour auf einem Kanal gemacht und dabei so wunderbare Tiere in freier Wildbahn gesehen, dass es für mich einer der schönsten - Wenn nicht der schönste - Ausflug bisher war.
In order to get to Puerto Limon we actually passed the opening to the Panama Canal. Speculations are running high. My favorite theory is that it is all about the timeslot for the locks that need to bemet. But I am not complaining: There were vertical clouds and then we did a little boat tour and saw wonderful animals in ther nature habitat. So for me this was one ofe the best - if not the best - tours of the cruise so far.

Nach der Tour wollten Martina und ich einen Geldautomaten an Land suchen
After our tour Martina and I wanted to find an ATM-machine in Puerto Limon
Warum? - Why?
Weil wir beide keine amerikanischen Dollars mit an Bord gebracht hatten. Warum auch? Trinkgeld war ja eingeschlossen. Was wir nicht bedacht hatten, waren die lokalen Tourguides, denen man kein Trinkgeld geben konnte bzw. bald waren die Eurovorräte (meine waren netterweise von Theresia und Stefan noch aufgefüllt worden) aufgebraucht. Was also tun?
Because both of us did not bring any American dollars - we already pyed for tips on the ship ahead with our tickets. What we both hadn't thought of was the tourguides who we wanted to tip, but soon we ran out of Euros (I only had 5 Euro notes becaus thankfully Theresia and Stefan shared theirs with me). So what could we do?
Reiseleiter Dieter - The German guy from our Agency Dieter
(Nebenbei bermerkt nennen wir ihn immer nur Reiseleiter Dieter, weil er an den ersten Tagen immer während des Abendessens mit so einem Schild auftauchte, auf dem "Reiseleiter Dieter" stand
So hilfreich wie immer - Danke für gar nichts. Immerhin sagte er uns, dass der Umtusch von Geld wahrscheinlich an Bord nicht möglich sei, vielleicht an der Rezeption, das sei der einzige Ort auf dem Schiff, wo es Bargeld gäbe (stimmte auch nicht).
As helpful as always - thank you for nothing. But he did tell us that changing money would probably not be possible on board, the only place where there was any money was at the reception (and even that was wrong)
Die Rezeption - the Reception
Wollte gern helfen, konnte es aber auch nicht, und verwies uns immerhin auf das Casino, das a ber natürlich nur auf See geöffnet sei. Euros könne man allerdings wechseln. Ich also in meine Kabine (vom 5. zum 12 Deck) und wieder zurück mit einem 50 Euro-Schein. Inzwischen hatte sich die Sachlage allerdings verändert (Martina war schon entnervt zum Kaffee aufgebrochen), und ich musste unverrichteter Dinge wieder abmarschieren.
The reception wanted to be helpful, but couldn't help us, but sent us off to the casino, which (of course) would only be open at sea. But the receptionist said she could change a 50 Euro bill into 5 Euro bills, which would have helped a little. so while Martina gave up, I hurried to my cabin (from the 5th deck to the 12th) and back in order to find out that the policy had changed in the meantime and I did not get my 50 Euro bill changed.
Nun begann das Abenteuer -Now the adventure began
Das Infopapier, das wir bei jedem Landgang bekommen hatte erwähnt, dass es einen Geldautomaten im Hafen gäbe, und irgendjemand (Reiseleiter Dieter? Niemals!) hatte erwähnt, dass man hier an Geldautomaten Amerikanische Dollars bekäme.
The information on Puerto Limon that we get in every port, by the way, had told us that there was an ATM machine at the port and someone hat mentioned that here it would be possible to get American dollars from ATM machines.
Markthalle - market
Also machten wir uns auf den Weg mit unseren Kreditkarten und gelangten als erstes in eine Art Markthalle, voll mit Stänen nur für Kreuzfahrtschifftouristen. Wir durchsuchten sie gründlich fanden aber keinen Geldautomaten und fragten schließlich einen Uniformierten. Er wies nach draußen, etwas unbestimmt nach links.
So off we went with our creditcards nd came into a marketplace with al lot of sales for cruise tourists. We searched the hall but didn't find an ATM machine and finaly asked someone with a uniform. He pointed outside and to the left.

Wir nahmen also all unseren Mut zusammen und verließen das Hafengelände, wozu wir nur unsere Criuisecard brauchten. Draußen stand ein Taxifahrer und wollte uns für 5 Dollar zur Bank fahren. Wir lehnten höflich ab (wir hatten ja auch keine Dollars!), woraufhin er in eine Straße wies und meinte, dort sei eine Bank.
So we decided to be brave and left the port, which we could do just with our cruisecard, no passport needed. Outside we were met by a tyxidriver who offered to bring us tof a bank for 5 dollars (which we didn_-'t have, remember? So he pointed us to a direction and we went as told.
Gefunden - Found it
Eine Ecke weiter fanden wir tatsächlich eine Bank, aber jetzt standen wir vor dem nächsten Problem. Es gab zwei Warteschlangen. Eine vor den Geldautomaten und eine vor der Bank selbst, die von einem Sicherheitsmann bewacht wurde, der Kundinnen rein und raus ließ.
After one block there was a bank, but now the next problem arose. There seemed to be two waiting lines, one for the ATM machines and one for the bak iteself, which was garded by some security guy who woul let people in and out of the building.
Erster Versuch - First try
Wir entschieden uns für die Schlange an den Geldautomaten, und nach ein paar Minuten fragte ich den Mann vor mir, ob man an diesen Geldautomaten tatsächlich amerikanische Dollars bekäme. Er konferrierte mit den Menschen vor ihm in der Schlange und gemeinsam kam man zu dem Schluss, dass man zu diesem Zweck in die Bank selbst müsse. Also verließen wir diese sChlange und schlossen uns der Warteschlange vor dem Haupteingang an.
We decided to try the ATM-machine and after a few minutes I asked the guy in front of me if we could get Americn dollars from this ATM-machines. He discussed it with the people in front of them and they agreed that we would have to go into the bank directls. So we left this queue and entered the other one in front of the building.
Zweiter Versuch - Second try
Als wir nach drei Songs der gegenüber stehenden Straßenmusikerin endlich drinnen waren, wurden wir höflich aber bestimmt wieder zur Geldautomatensschlange geschickt. Wir waren hocherfreut, und Martina wollte aufgeben, aber ich war dazu nicht bereit! Costa Rica würde mich nicht besiegen!
After three songs of the singer opposite to the bank it was our turn to enter the building where they told us to go back to the line at the ATM machine. We were thrilled and Martina was ready to give up, but I was determined. I wasn't going to let Costa Rica beat me!
Finaler Versuch - Final try
Also zurück auf Los, ziehe keine 4000 Mark ein. Und dann die Überraschung: Der Geldautomat sprach Englisch und war bereit, uns Amerikanische Dollar auszuzahlen. Also bat ich um 50 (ich fand das nicht unverschämt), aber der Automat antwortete ohne Nachzudenken, das sei zu viel, ich könne höchstens 20 bekommen und möge bitte wieder von vorn anfangen. Gesagt getan, und wir bekamen beide unsere 20 Dollar.
So back to square one. And then the surprise: The ATM machine was able to communicate in English and willing to give us American dollars. So I hubly asked for 50, but the machine answered right away that this was to much, he woud only give me 20 and I would have to start all over again - which I did. And both of us got our 20 dollars.
Nur ein Scheinsieg - not a real victory
Wir hatten zwar beide 20 Dollar, aber es war ein einzelner 20 Dollar-Schein, der uns unser Trinkgeld-Problem in keinster Weise löste
Now we both had 20 dollars, but it was one 20 dollar bill, which did not solve our tip-problem!
Ende gut, alles gut - All's well that ends well
Am Ende hat sich Petra unserer erbarmt und uns unsere 20 Dollarscheine in 20 einzelne Dollars gewechselt.
Finally it was Petra who felt sorry for us and changed our 20 Dollar bill into 20 single dollars.

Und dann saßen wir auch schon im Bus und überquerten den ersten Kanal
And then we were on our way to the mangroves and crossed the first canal
Erst ging's durch die üblichen verstopften Straßen einer Großstadt, in der arm und reich doch recht nah beeinanderlag, das kriegt man vom Bus aus schlecht fotografiert. Zudem saß eine nette, aber sehr redebedürftige Frau aus Ibiza neben mir, die ihr englisch testen wollte und sich über unterschiedliche Dialekte ausließ. Dabei wurde mir klar, dass es da eine Erfahrung gibt, die man als Deutsche nicht machen kann: In ein Land am anderen Ende des Globus zu fahren, wo man die selbe Sprache spricht. Das geht bei englisch, französisch und spanisch, sogar niederländisch habe ich auf Curaco gehört, aber nicht bei deutsch. Komisch, was?
First we went through the normal jammed streets of a big town where rich and poor are colse together and which is difficult to capture in a picture. What made it even more difficult was the nice Lady from Ibiza that sat next to me and wanted to test her english by talking about different dialects... I then realized that there is something you cannot experience as a German speaking person and that is to travel far away and come to countries where they speak your language. It works for english, french, spanish, even netherlandic I heard spoken in Curacao, but it doesn't work for German. Funny, isn't it?

Immer vier in einem Kanu fahren wir durch große und kleine Kanäle, wir sehen Vögel, êinen Mann uf einem Floß Marke Eigenbau, einen Fischer, einen Termitenstamm, der in einem Baum hängt, und noch mehr Vögel, und es ist schön zu beobachten, wie wir alle immer stiller werden - auch der etwas nervige Reiseführer mit seinem überlauten Lautsprecher.
There's always four of us in one boat and off we go through big canals and smal canals, we see birds, a man on his homemade draft, a fisherman and a hanging sack of termites in a tree nd more birds. It feels good to observe how we all become quieter and quieter even our tourguide who as a kind of noisy person.
Nach einem erfrischenden Kaltgetränk in einer Kokosnuss geht es auch schon weiter Richtung Altstadt, vorbei an dem hoffentlich allerletzten Weihnachtsbaum

Auch Curacao hat nur wenig mehr als 100.000 Einwohner/innen, gehört aber zu den Niederlanden, was man auf Schritt und Tritt merkt: Alles viel adretter mit Kanälen und Brücken und bunten schmalen Häusern.
Curacao also has only a little more than 100.000 inhabitants, but belongs to the Netherlands which you are reminded of every step you take: All is very tidy with Canals, bridges and those smal colorful houses.

An dieser Formation sind wir vorbeigefahren, keine Ahnung, was das war, ich habe aber bei der Gelegenheit gelernt, dass man bei 10 m Höhe über dem Mehresspiegel (die ich auf Deck 12 haben sollte) nur mal gerade 20 Km weit schauen kann, bevor die Erdkrümmung einsetzt und die Sichtweise beschränkt.

Grenada
Hier habe ich eine Tour in die Natur gebucht: Regenwald und ein Vulkansee.

Grenada ist eine relativ kleine Insel mit nur wenig etwas über 100.000 Einwohner/innen, die zum Commonwealth gehört. Im Zuge der Kolonialisierung ist sie zwischen England und Frankreich umkämpft gewesen. Einig waren sich beide nur darin, versklavte Afrikaner/innen auf Zuckerrohrplantagen arbeiten zu lassen.
Wir hatten ein wunderbaren Führer, der sich selbst deutsch beigebracht hatte über Bücher, Markus Lanz, Michel Freidman und Bares für Rares.
Er war sehr stolz auf sein Land und hat das auch gut rübergebracht. Es gibt ein Sozialsystem, keine Bettler und der Landbesitz ist einigermaßen gleich aufgeteilt - jedenfalls hat er das gesagt. Frauen sind schon lange gleichberechtigt. Er hat auch betont, dass alle Religionen friedlich koexistieren und die Menschen alle zum Teil karibisch, englisch, französich, afrikanisch und indisch seien.
Grenada is a relatively small island with only a little over 100.000 inhabitants. It is part of the British Commonwealth. During colonial times it was battled over by the French and the Englisch, until it finally gained independance. The English and French brought slaves for the sugar cane plantations and afterwards a lot of Indians (people from India) came to work here, so it's a mixture by now.
We had a wonderful guide who was very proud of his country and spoke a funny German because he had taught himself by books and watching German television.
He emphasized that people and religions coexist peacefully, women have equal rights and there has been a new distribution of land after becoming independance. I enjoyed listening zu him.

We actually sail to a bay, and are being equipped: life vests and three guides to take care of usin the water.
Gestern noch habe ich mit Martina darüber gesprochen, dass ich noch nie gesegelt bin - und heute bin ich schon auf einem Katamaran und segele zum Schnorcheln. Und alles ist ganz einfach: Ich bin eine gute Schwimmerin und die West tut das Ihrige. Die Guides füttern Fische an und ich sehe UNTER WASSER kleine bunte Fische, aber auch welche, die größer als ein Meter sind, drei Rochen und eine Schildkröte. Wunderbar!!!
Yesterday I talked to Martina about the fact that I have never set foot on a sailboat before and probably will never do so - and today I am sailing with a katamaran to a bay to snorkel. I saw UNDER WATER small fish, big fish three stingrays and a seaturtle. Wonderful!!!

Fünfter von fünf Seetagen auf dem Atlantik - von Madeira nach Barbados

Das Meer ist bislang sehr ruhig, die Wellen maximl 2 m hoch, wovon man auf einem Schiff dieser Größe wenig bis gar nichts mitbekommt.
The sea is rather quiet, the waves no more than two yards high. I don't feel much of it.

Es ist ein komisches Gefühl, dass es ab jetzt nicht mehr wieder richtig kalt werden wird. Es ist heute 30 Grad Celsius. Das hatte ich vorher gar nicht bedacht - und natürlich viel zu viele langärmelige Pullover mitgenommen.
It's a funny feeling that from now on it will not become really cold again. It's 86 degrees Fahrenheit today. I hadn't thought of that and therefore brought way too many sweaters.

Auch das war mir nicht klar: Wie sehr ich diesen Rückzugsort brauche, wo ich nicht beschallt werde - keine Musik, keine überlauten Stimmen, kein Gedränge (Lia, schau mal, was oben links hängt).
I also learned how much I need this space for myself where nobody bothers me, no music, no loud voices, no crowded spaces. just me and the sea. I love that - and what's more important: I need it.
Wie sieht so ein Seetag bei mir aus?
What does a day on sea look like for me?
Aufstehen meist so gegen 8, dann Zähneputzen mit Hüftgymnastik, danach ein Kaffee in der Kabine (schnelllöslich aus dem Wasserkocher), die täglichen Duolingo- Lektionen in Französisch, Griechisch und Musik, um 8:45 gibt es dann Vorträge zu den nächsten Landgängen, heute z.B. zu Kolumbien. Der heutige Vortrag hat mich einigermaßen fassungslos zurückgelassen (und es spricht für sich , dass niemand hier meine Ansicht teilt): Zum einen fängt die Geschichte Kolumbiens für die Vortragende erst bei der Ankunft der Spanier an, und wenn sich dann doch mal Menschen in die Berichte einschleichen, die schon vorher in Kolumbien gewohnt haben, dann wird von "Indianern" oder "Ureinwohnern" gesprochen.
Danach geht's ab ins Fitness-Studio, wo ich manchmal etwas warten muss bis ein Stepper oder ein Laufband frei wird. Da wird dann 20 Minuten lang gegangen bzw. gesteppt (sehr gut für die Hüfte), und danach
arbeite ich mich noch ein wenig an anderen Geräten ab, die angeblich Muskeln an verschiedenen Stellen meines Körpers aufbauen sollen. Ist auf jeden Fall angemessen schweißtreibend und tut gut. Auf dem Rückweg in meine Kabine gibt es ein Glas Ananas- und ein Glas Grapefruitsaft. Eiskalt und super wohltuend.
In der Kabine warte ich dann, bis ich ausgeschwitzt bin, bevor ich eine Dreiminutendusche hinlege, um den Schweiß abzuwaschen. Dann ist es auch schon gegen 11 und ich vergnüge mich eine Stunde mit Homepage-Befüllen, Lesen, Stricken, Sudoku oder Netflix, bis es Zeit für die Schola Cantorum, den bordeigenen Chor um 12:15 ist. Dort treffe ich Christina, eine sehr nette Sopransängerin, mit der ich viel Spaß beim Singen habe und mit der ich anschließend (inklusive ihres Ehemannes) am Buffet imSahara Restaurant zu Mittag esse. Dabei ist es schwierig, nicht zu viel Dessert zu essen, weil diese so lecker sind.
Von 14 bis 15 Uhr ist Mittagsruhe, dann langsames Aufwachen und meist so gegen 15:30 Uhr Kaffee mit Martina im Sahara-Ressaurant oder dahinter draußen, wenn es nicht zu heiß ist. Dann wieder Kabine bis 17:30 Uhr, wenn es Zeit wird, sich für das Abendessen im Restaurant Edera fertigzumachen. Anständige Kleidung, Makeup, etc.
Abendessen kann man auch am Buffet im Sahara Restaurant, das bis auf wenige Stunden immer geöffnet zu sein scheint, aber ich bevorzuge das Restaurant L'Edera (keine Ahnung, was diese namen bedeuten...), wo man immer mit denselben Menschen den Tisch teilt, bei mir sind das neben Martina und Petra, die ebenfalls alleinreisen, noch die Paare Hans und Rita, Hans und Carola und Peter und Carmen. Alles nette Menschen. Ich sitze zwischen Martina und Petra.
Da tauscht man sich dann über die wichtigsten Ereignisse des Tages aus: Funktioniert die Toilette wieder? Treffen wir uns bei der Abendveranstaltung, wie ist das Wetter in Deutschland, ist das Fitnessstudio nachmittags leerer als vormittags? Konnte Reiseleiter Dieter dazu gebracht werden, bei einem Problem zu unterstützen, usw.: das Wichtigste des Tages eben. Währenddessen bekommen wir ein leckeres frisches Brötchen mit Butter und wählen aus der Tageskarte Vorspeise, Hauptspeise und Nachspeise aus, die uns dann unsere netten Kellner (Namen kann ich mir leider nicht merken) servieren. Dazu gibt es Wasser für mich und Wasser und Wein für alle anderen.
Danach wieder Kabine (jedenfalls ich) und je nach Programm um 20:45 noch einmal Treffen mit dem einen oder der anderen im Royal Theater zur Abendveranstaltung, z.B. Carmen in 40 Minuten oder Chansons vorgetragen von Mimma Barra oder, oder oder... Manchmal nehme ich mit Martina danach noch einen Aperol in der Tiger- oder einer anderen Bar, aber bei 10,35 € kann ich mir das nicht jeden Abend leisten, das wären bei 4 1/2 Monaten nämlich über 1.000 Euro...
Wie sieht so ein Seetag bei mir aus?
What does a day on sea look like for me?
I mostly get up around 8 o'clock, then it's brushing my teeth while doing hip exercises, then a coffee (decaf) in the cabin and after that I do my Duolingo exercises in French, Greek and Music.
At 8:45 there's a lecture on one of the next countries we are travelling today it was on Colombia and I didn't like it very much because for the guide the history of Colombia starts with the Spanish conquering it and the people living there before that were called "Indians". It doesn't seem to bother anybody but me...
After that I go to the gym and walk for 20 minutes which is very good for my hip. Then I work out on some of the apparatusses until I'm done and go back zu my cabin.
On the way I grab a glass of pinapple and a glass of grapefruit juice from the buffet. very cold and very delicious.
Then I wait until the sweating stops before I take a 3 minute shower to wash off the sweat and enjoy what I have done. I read or write or knit or watch a series on Netflix or Disney+ before it's time to go to the Schola cantorum, the quoir on bord at 12:15.
There I meet Christina, a very nice soprano and we sing together and have fun. After the practice (and we are going to give 3 concerts) I go and have lunch with her and her husband at the buffet (Sahara) on deck 13. It is hard not to eat to many deserts as they are all very delicious and very sweet.
From 2 to 3 I take my afternoon nap, I take my time waking up and often meet with Martina for a coffee and some mor deserts... We talk and enjoy the time until we go bck to our cabins to slowly get ready for dinner (get properly dressed, put on make up and decide on the jewellry).
Dinner ist available also at the Buffet, but I prefer the restaurant where I always sit with the same people: Martina and Petra, another woman travelling by herself, and three couples, Hand and Rita, hans and Carola and Peter and Carmen, who are all very nice.
We talk about the important topics of the day: Does the toilet work again, do we meet for the evening entertainment, what is the weather like in Germany, ist the gym emptier at noon thean at morning, did anybody see the German guide Dieter actually work?
Meanwhile we get the fresh roll as a starter and then chose our starters, main dishes and deserts from the menue. we are being served by Wirata form Indonesia and he keeps bringing the dishes and the drinks: water for me and water and wine for everyboda else.
After that I go back to my cabin and when I feel like it or when I want to see it I watch the evening entertainment at 8:45 in the Royal Theater, for example Carmen, the opera, in 40 Minutes or chansons sung by Mimma Barra.
Sometimes I have a Aperol spritz after that with Martina, but since it costs more than 10 Euros, I can't do it every day. Taht would cost me more than 1000 Euros for the whole time...

Madeira ist steil, wie man sehen kann. Entsprechend müssen wir erst mal vom Hafen aus eine steile Straße/Treppe hoch.

Anzumerken ist, dass das Bemalen von Haustüren durchaus keine Tradition ist, sondern nach einem entsetzlichen Hochwasser vom Bürgermeister zur Belustigung der Touristen beschlossen wurde.

Was für ein verrückter und wunderbarer Zufall, dass Theresia und Stefan kurzentschlossen zwei Wochen Urlaub auf Madeira buchen genu in der Zeit, in der ich auch dort bin?
Whata crazy and wonderful coincidence that Theresia and Stefan decided to take a trip to Madeira exactly when I am there?
Erst haben wir wunderbar zusammen gegessen und dann gemeinsam den Botanischen Garten angeschaut. Dabei mussten wir leider so viel quatschen (zumindest Theresia und ich), dass keine Fotos entstehen konnten. Stefan hat offensichtlich weniger geredet und schöne Fotos von Theresia und mir gemacht.

Zwei Seetage auf dem Weg nach Madeira

Jedenfalls hatte ich das gehofft, aber irgendwie war ich dann doch die ganze Zeit ziemlich beschäftigt, auch weil ich (absolut irre!) durch den Internetzugang weiter Deutsch mit Hussain machen und am Buchclub-Treffen teilnehmen konnte. Mal ganz von den Telefonaten abgesehen...
At least that is what I hoped for, but somehow I kept being busy, also due to the fact that because of my internet I could do videoconferences with Hussain to work on his German and participate in my bookclub. And do telefonecalls, and so on and so forth.
Und dann wird man auch noch mit Papieren zugemüllt. Tagesplan hier, Ausflüge dort, bitte ausfüllen und zum Ausflugscenter zurückbringen. Wo das ist? Steht natürlich auf einem anderen Blatt. Auf welchem? Auf einem der 20, die ich an die Seite gelegt habe, weil ich sie vielleicht noch brauche. Das ist anstrengend, und man überliest leicht etwas, oder man erinnert sich dunkel, findet aber die Seite nicht mehr.
Und dummerweise wird sich das vermutlichnicht ändern, denn die Papierfülle nimmt nicht ab,

Where is that sheet? Somewhere in the stack of 20 or so papers that you have kept, because you thought, there could be something useful on them. That is stressful and no fun!
And it's probably not going to change, because there's more papiers every day.
Natürlich versucht man auch, sich mit dem Schiff vertraut zu machen. Wo ist vorne, wo ist hinten?
Meine Kabine ist auf Deck 12, Essen gibt's auf Deck 5 und Deck 13, Fitnesscenter ist auf Deck 14, aber nicht jedes Treppenhaus geht bis da hoch, und die Veranstaltungsorte sind auf Deck 6 (jedenfalls die meisten). Und irgendwie sieht alles gleich aus!
And of course you try to figure out the ship: Where is the front, where is the back? My cabin is on deck 12, Food is on decks 13 and 5, gym on deck 13, but not every stairwell goes up to that deck, meetings are mostly on deck 6. And somehow it all looks alike...

Hier hatte ich einen dreistündigen Rundgang durch die Altstadt gebucht.
Marseille ist die älteste Stadt Frankreichs und wurde 600 Jahre AC erbaut. Es gibt jede Menge alte Mauern, viele Kirchen und zwei Festungen. alles sehr beeeindruckend und wunderschön.
I had booked a three hour walk through the old parts of Marseille.
Marseille is the oldest city of France founded 600 years bc. There were a lot of old walls, churches and two fortresses. All very impressive and beautiful!

Heute geht es an Bord
Today I go on board
Aber erst geht es natürlich mit Roman, Werner und Christian, die so stolz auf "ihren" Bus sind, nach Genua. Es zahlt sich aus, diesen "Zubringer" gebucht zu haben. Ich muss mich nicht ums Gepäck kümmern, werde direkt bis zum Schiff gebracht und kann alles genießen (auch wenn es schweinekalt ist, was das mit dem Genießen ein bisschen erschwert. Aber der Reisebus ist immer noch superluxuriös, und so sind wir gegen Mittag in Genua am Hafen, direkt vor der MS Magnifica.
But first I have to get to Genova. Not a hard task, since I booked the package that takes me there on a super luxurious bus and brings me directly to the ship not having to worry about luggage or the boarding procedure. The only thing not so pleasant is the weather. It is prettty cold when I arrive around noon at the port of Genova directly in front of the MS Magnifica which will be my home for the next 4 1/2 months.

Caroli hat mich zu nachtschlafender Zeit zum Bahnhof gebracht mit meinen beiden Koffern und meiner Reisetasche, wo schon der Zubringer der Fa. Peters mitsamt Juniorchef auf mich wartete. Zusammen mit einem paar aus der Nähe von Osnabrück ging es dann nach Dortmund, wo wir in den Mega-Luxusreisebus umgestiegen sind.
Carol took me to the trainstation in Bielefeld, where I was picked up by car together with another couple and taken to Dortmund, where we mounted a First class Luxurybus.

Im Reisebus ging es unter fachkundiger Betreuung von Werner (ich bin eigentlich schon in Rente), Christian (ich war auch son mal REttungssanitäter) und Roman (Eigentlich verkaufen wir unsere eigenen Reisen) quer durch Deutschland bis zum Vierwaldstätter See (heißt so, weil vier Schweizer Kantone an ihn grenzen), wo wir einen kleinen Imbiss zu uns nahmen, der meine Mitreisende Martina zu dem Ausspruch brachte: "Käse können sie (die Schweizer)". Preise können sie auch.
With the bus we went all the way through Germany and into Switzerland, where we had dinner and slept in a small hotel, while it was snowing and freezing cold (and dark, therefore no pictures). It was next to a wonderful lake, though.

Plötzliche Sehstörungen auf dem linken Auge am 23.12. - sudden visual defect in my left eye on Dec 23rd
Erst ignoriere ich es - I try to ignore it.
Dann doch Termin bei der Augenärztin am 30.12. - anxiety (or reason) takes over and I go see my eyedoctor
Sie entdeckt ein Loch n der Netzhaut und schickt mich zum lasern in die Augenklinik (natürlich am anderen Ende der Stadt - € 50 für den Taxifahrer) - she identifies a hole in my retina and sends me off to the clinic to get it lazered ($ 50 for the taxi).
Der Arzt in der Augenklinik kann kein Loch entdecken und schickt mich wieder nach Hause. Ich will Geld sparen und nehme die Öffis, obwohl ich halbblind bin. Am 2.1. sollich es noch mal von der Augenärztin kontrollieren lassen - The clinic's doctor can not detect a hole and sends me home, but advises me to have my eyedoctor check it on Jan 2nd.
Also wieder zur Augenärztin. Sie besteht (natürlich) auf ihrer Diagnose und zieht noch eine Kollegin zu. Gemeinsam kommen sie zu dem Schluss, dass es jetzt aber ok ist, und ich nur nächste Woche eine Kontrolle machen lassen soll (das wäre dann in Barcelona oder Marseille :-). Ich bekomme einen Bericht mit und soll auf folgende Warnsignale achten: Blitze, Schleier und Mückenschwärme, die nicht weggehen. - So another appointment at my eyedoctor. She is upset and questions (of course) the clinic's doctor's diagnosis. She asks a collegue to come and: check on my eye. and together they agree (hallelujah!) that nothing needs to be done right now, but I should have it checked next week (that would be in Spain or France :-).
Ich bin dankbar für all diese gründlichen Ärzt/inn/en und meine Krankenversicherung (auch unterwegs)! - I am very thankful for all theses thorough doctors and my insurance in Germany and on the trip!

Meine Wohnung versinkt im Chaos, ein Koffer ist gepackt, ein weiterer steht in der Warteschleife, ebenso wie eine Reisetasche.

...to apply online for visa: I had to upload crazy selfies and pictures of my passport and answer a zillion questions - and it was also expensive, for example 138 Dollars for New Zealand. As a consequence I did not convert the Namibian dollars since it wasn't going to change anything...

Das schwierige war, dass die Taucherbrille meine Seestärke haben sollte, damit ich beim Schnorcheln auch etwas sehe. Ein völlig unterschätztes Unterfangen, dass mir eine Fahrradtour zu einem Tauchshop, mehrere erfolglose Versuche, vor Ort einen Optiker zu finden und am Ende den Kontakt zu einem fantastischen Optiker in Düsseldorf einbrachte.
The difficult task was to get goggles that had my prescription so that I can see something under water. In order to get that I had to buy goggles in a sportsshop and then find an optician who was willing to put the glass in. An expensive and time consuming task, believe me!

...mein Ziel war -und ist - es, an Bord nicht aufzufallen, d.h. ich musste meine Garderobe einigermaßen aufrüsten - das eine oder andere neue Kleid (auch gebraucht), neue Schuhe (zum neuen Kleid), Strumpfhosen zu den neuen Schuhen zum neuen Kleid, etc.
Am Ende war das fast ein Horror, weil ich das Gefühl hatte, viel zu viel Geld auszugeben.

In meinem Alter nimmt man Nahrungsergänzungsmittel: etwas für die Augen, etwas für die Gelenke, etwas für die Muskeln, etwas für den Eisenhaushalt, usw. Das muss in hinreichenden Mengen eingekauft und eingepackt werden. Ich habe diverse dms und Rossmanns leergekauft und dann ernsthaft darüber nachgedacht, die Pillen aus den Blisterpackungen herauszudrücken, damit sie weniger Platz einnehmen: Ein Einkaufsbeutel komplett voll. Von den Kosten wollen wir mal gar nicht reden.
At my age I take dietary suppelemts: for the eyes, for the muscles, for the joints and so on. Those need to be bought and packed away. I had to go to different drugstores and seriously thought about getting rid of the blisters to reduce the space. Not to talk about the money I spent on that: 140 pills of everything!
